Underwater Cameras

In the last decade, as people continue to observe what is underwater as closely as science has explored space, underwater cameras have become a bit of a sensation. When you think about it, there have even been packages developed with underwater camera cases to turn your standard camera into a watertight package. What sort of detail and functionality can you expect from an underwater camera, and for what general purposes is it used?

Pictures of the first underwater camera were taken by William Thompson as far back as 1856, and the first motion picture under water was filmed in 1914 by John Ernest Williamson. However, underwater cameras have come a long way technologically in the last 150 years.

For the most part, an underwater color camera is used for vacation purposes, to snap shots of friends and family while swimming or to catch a great shot of various underwater species while snorkeling or scuba diving. In some cases, underwater video cameras are used to document special expeditions into sunken ships or to seek out suspected new species that have recently been discovered. Yet others are just for fishing. An underwater fishing camera will pick up the actual action of the fish as it grabs the hook and bait and follow its struggle, helping fishermen to better understand how fish react and improve fishing techniques.

The underwater camera housing protects the film, batteries, memory cards, and other electronic components that are included within the camera. Underwater camera housings can be purchased separately for some brands to waterproof a standard camera. Camera housing for underwater photography does not come cheap, though, and is limited to use within the same brand name for specific models only.

Underwater camera reviews rave about the Atlantis underwater camera, one of the best available and built to tolerate deeper submersion than most cameras. Its underwater camera case is built to last at extreme depths for professional underwater excursions. Of course, if you are an amateur photographer looking to take some footage while scuba diving or snorkeling, you should look for a cheap underwater video camera to start with so that you get a feel for how they work and won’t be out thousands of dollars should it malfunction.

Underwater cameras give people the ability to shoot in water without fear of ruining cameras, and they also help us study the entire world beneath us in the water that we have long neglected due to our fascination with what is above. These properties will continue to cause the underwater camera to rise in popularity at an outrageous rate for a long time to come.
