Film Processing
The art of film processing has been reduced to the simplicity of running it through a machine for a one-hour turnaround these days. In the past, it was necessary to have a dark room, and it could take days to process your prints. In some cases, there is still a need for the old fashioned method to be used, but determining the application can be difficult.
For most 35mm film processing, you can trust discount film processing centers to do a good job for you. The technicians are adequately trained and able to produce quality prints with the one-hour photo machine, as long as the film is standard 35mm format. When it comes to some other specialty processing needs, however, you may have to send your film into a professional processing center. For example if you have disposable camera film processing needs, most discount and one-hour centers are not able to open these cameras and remove film for processing. Usually, they will send it to a Kodak film processing center (or perhaps Fuji, depending upon the store contract), where trained technicians will carefully remove the film from these cameras and process it appropriately.
When it comes to having your digital images printed, you should make sure that the shop where you usually have your prints developed has the capability of appropriately transferring the digital prints to photo paper. In fact, many of these outlets will have machines where you can print out the images yourself from a CD that you take in.
Other instances where a discount center may not be able to help you are in slide film processing or 3D film processing. Usually, you will have to take these types of film to specialty camera or photography centers for development. You also won’t find hospitals and doctors’ offices counting on one-hour photo services for their needs. Manual x-ray film processing is still a standard for most medical operations, meaning that a trained technician must be available to produce these images for the physicians.
In order to get a better idea of the best locations to take specialty prints as opposed to standard development prints, you can read film processing reviews, which will give you an idea of other photographers’ opinions on various outfits and locations that they have used in the past for their special needs. If you only take standard prints and never have a need for development of special images, you can probably stick to your local one-hour processor.
