Large Format Cameras

Large format cameras are not in general use today but have been used by a number of famous photographers in the past and can be hired from some agents around the world today. A large format camera actually used film or a digital sensor that is sized for a large photo image, generally at least 4”x5” and usually larger.

A large format camera is usually found in the form of an old style box camera, which incorporates a lens, a large accordion style enclosure that is sealed tight against light leakage, and a focal plate at the back, which is replaced at the time the picture is to be taken with a piece of sheet film. The size of that sheet is determined by the size of the large format camera, which usually takes at least a 4x5 inch piece of film (anything smaller would be categorized as a medium format film camera).

Ultra large format cameras can accept giant sized sheet film, such as 20”x24” sheets. In fact, among large format film cameras, the Polaroid 20x25 inch instant camera is one of the largest in common use today. Many famed photographers have made use of the wheeled-chassis Polaroid camera, which weighs an incredible 235 pounds. The 4x5 large format camera is much more common, and the 8x10 large format camera is often used by professional photographers who specialize in portraits. The Phillips large format cameras are quite popular among professionals because they incorporate a lot of features that make the camera more highly adjustable for regulation and custom performance. Ansel Adams is one of the most popular photographers to have used such a machine.
