Memory Card Readers

Memory card readers are excellent accessories to carry with your digital camera and memory card, especially since not every computer has a slot for memory cards. In fact, on the go when all you have is your laptop, you’ll find that you typical don’t have a card reader in your machine, at which point downloading of pictures can only be accomplished with an external reader.

An SD card reader can be used for just about any memory card that any digital camera can hold. These card readers are configured so that you can simply insert the memory card and have the computer recognize the new media, offering you the opportunity to open it or download images from it without question. The same is true from a printer with a memory card reader. You simply insert the chip into the slot and prints begin to process and come out of the printer. SD card readers are included on many printers and most computers now, although many laptops still lack a port for such technology.

In case you don’t have a reader and need to download your pictures, you can always use the USB cord connecting to your camera and take the prints straight from your digital camera. However, you can also opt to purchase a USB SD card reader, a separate compartment that works somewhat like a hard drive enclosure into which you can install an internal hard drive. Basically, you insert the card and close the case, as if it was a small hard drive. You then connect a cord to your PC , laptop, or printer so that the pictures can be read and downloaded for viewing, editing, or printing purposes.

Of course, there is more than one kind of media card reader, and not all are configured for SD cards. In fact, an XD card reader may not be able to read your SD card at all and may only be capable of translating data from an XD card into a viewable image.

Regardless of the type of media card you have on your camera, there will probably come a time when you need to download pictures on the go. If your laptop or a local PC doesn’t have a slot for your memory card, it may be essential to carry a memory card reader with you wherever you go so that you can rest assured you have a way to download your pictures and make room for more.
