Digital Storage Devices
With everything in life becoming electronic – mail, photos, documents, etc – having access to digital storage devices is more than just a convenience; it’s a necessity. You can choose any type of media and any of a number of storage options and back up your information on some sort of storage equipment with general ease.
There are several types of digital photo storage devices to choose from, with the most popular commonly being a CD. Compact discs afford the opportunity to clear up hard drive space on your computer by offering another type of electronic media onto which the images can be stored. Since some photo files (typically saved in .jpg format) can be quite large, using this external digital photo storage device can really clear up a lot of internal memory in your computer.
Of course, the CD can only hold up to 700 megabytes of information, which severely limits the capacity for pictures. Lately, the trend for saving images on a portable digital storage device has turned to the DVD. DVD-R’s work just like CD-R’s, with the exception of additional storage space. In fact, a DVD can hold 4.5 gigabytes of data, allowing you to store the same content on a single DVD as you would on six or more CDs (and double that for a dual-layer DVD-R). While DVD-R’s are a bit more costly than CD-R’s, the amount of storage space afforded per disc makes them a lot more cost effective, as well as less space consuming.
Of course, these are not the only storage devices available for digital images. In fact, the most popular digital storage device is still the computer hard drive. With the ever-increasing storage capacity of a single PC, people are less and less concerned with bogging down their computer and running out of storage space. However, even this is a non-issue with external hard drives being used as portable storage devices for backing up materials and storing incredible amounts of data. Imagine the number of photos you can store on a 500 gigabyte external hard drive and how much less physical room this would require than the over 100 DVD-R’s it would take to equal this capacity (or the 600+ CD-R’s you would need to do the same). In terms of price, there is also no comparison, as the hard drive would be exponentially less expensive.
Of course, the choice is yours, but take into consideration all digital storage devices and their various capabilities before making your decision as to which one is right for you.
