Compact Flash Drive

If you are not as technologically adept as others, you may be wondering exactly what is a flash drive. Each computer has a hard drive for storage capabilities, and in the past, in order to transfer information from one PC hard drive to another, floppy discs or CDs were used. Now, this is the main reason to learn how to use a flash drive. It is basically a miniature hard drive to which information can be saved temporarily and moved to another computer.

When first released on the market, the compact flash drive was a bit of a novelty, though it was well received. The first flash drive products only had minimal space, capable of transferring a few music files, some data or important written files, and other small digital files from one computer to another. However, with the newly available capacity of devices like the 8gb flash drive, these have become a way to temporarily store and backup files without the worry of running out of space.

There are other reasons to use a flash drive as well. For example, a bootable flash drive is sometimes used to upload a program to your PC or to restart your machine. While rarely needed to be recognized by new computer models, flash drive software and flash drive drivers must sometimes be installed on older models for compatibility purposes.

Since their introduction to the marketplace, the 1 GB flash drive has become the cheap flash drive on the market, with larger capacity models taking over for mainstream consumer purchase. In fact, anything smaller than 1 GB is often given away as a free flash drive, usually as an incentive with some other purchase. The 2 GB flash drive has become the most common size purchased by the average consumer and in terms of cost is the best bargain. A 2GB flash drive is large enough for most data transfer and transport needs, so anything larger is still a bit of a novelty. However, the 4GB flash drive is becoming more and more popular and is coming down in price drastically.

An 8 GB unit is also found in special circumstances, and the next step up for a flash drive, the 16GB version, is not out of the question. While they have not yet been offered in the mainstream and has not been made as small as the mini drives that are currently available, they have been built and will shortly be flooding the market as the latest technology.
