Camera Supports
There are various forms of camera supports that can be used to steady both still and video cameras to get that perfect shot, as well as to simply relieve the strain of holding up one of these devices for excessive amounts of time. From various strapping devices to legged rigs, camera supports can be simple or can add some complexity to your photo devices.
In choosing the type of camera support you want for your particular camera, you’ll want to analyze the way in which you use your photographic device, whether it is a still shot camera or camcorder, and how much your camera weighs. For example, if you have a large camcorder that is professional grade, it is probably too heavy to hang by a strap on our wrist or around your neck without causing yourself great pain. However, if you have a small digital point and click camera, setting up a large tripod to support your camera doesn’t make a lot of sense.
For small portable still shot cameras, neck straps are a great form of camera support. Neck straps can be quite comfortable, if you get a wide strap or one with a cushion, and these can even support slightly heavier units, including video cameras. You can choose to use a wrist strap for point and shoot cameras, but because these can easily slip off your hand if you aren’t careful, a neck strap should be used for portability, with wrist straps being a reserve convenience during active shooting. If you intend to shoot for long periods of time in one place, you may also choose a monopod setup. These can be quite sturdy for lightweight cameras and even for some heavier, more sophisticated models, including many SLR cameras. The only downside is that you may find monopods to become a bit wobbly on uneven ground or in heavy winds.
If you are going to be using a video camera from one location or a heavier, medium or large format camera, you may want to invest in other kinds of camera supports. Probably the best option here is a tripod. There is no shake or wobble, and most tripod platforms give you complete mobility in terms of angle, allowing you to twist, turn, rotate, and angle the secured camera as you please.
No matter what kind of camera you’re operating, there’s a solution for you so that you don’t have to constantly hold on to the unit as you go from place to place. Between shots, find one of these camera supports that suits your needs and give it a rest!
